These databases are a searchable, digitized version of the indices of civil registrations in England and Wales, reported quarterly to the General Register Office (GRO) in London. English and Welsh Surname Dictionary (Ancestry.co.uk : requires payment). This database is a dictionary of English and Welsh surnames. It describes the origin of each surname, indicating from where and from what the surname is derived. It also provides information on variant spellings, pronunciations, and other related names.

A dictionary of English and Welsh surnames with special American instances (Ancestry.co.uk : requires payment). Online edition of this book published in London in 1901.

1901 Leftovers. A website where people can post transcriptions of the images of the 1901 census of England and Wales they have purchased. Nearly 60,000 records are currently online.

London Gazette Archive (England and Wales). This archive contains all London Gazette editions from the war years (1914-1920, 1939-1948), and all London Gazette Honours and Awards in the 20th Century.

Office of National Statistics Name Search. This database contains a list of surnames in use in England, Wales and the Isle of Man in September 2002. The list contains almost 270,000 surnames, shared by 54.4 million people. Search the database to find out how many people share your surname. Additional query options let you list the most common names (up to 250).

Digital Library of Historical Directories from England and Wales : A digital library of eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth century local and trade directories from England and Wales being created by the University of Leicester.

England and Wales Visitation (Ancestry.co.uk : requires payment). This database contains genealogies of some of the citizens of England and Wales. Heralds conducted visitations to record the use of arms. Part of this included recording the pedigrees of the families using coats of arms. Pedigrees were recorded because families had to prove their right to bear the arms by showing their connections back to the original bearers. These visitations provide over 600 pedigree charts of English and Welsh families. While these visitations are similar in nature to those conducted during the 16th and 17th centuries, the families represented in these pedigrees were living during the 1700s and 1800s.

England and Wales, Law List, 1843 (Ancestry.co.uk : requires payment). Law lists were published from the late eighteenth century to the late twentieth century. They contained the names of lawyers, judges, and other legal professionals. This database contains the law list of 1843. Aside from the name of the professional, information that may be found in this list includes the name of the firm for which the individual worked, the town in which the firm was located, and the date of call.

Public Record Office - DocumentsOnline. DocumentsOnline allows you online access to the Public Record Office's collection of digitised public records including all Prerogative Court of Canterbury wills spanning the period 1384-1858 (more than 1 million wills.) The Prerogative Court of Canterbury dealt with the relatively wealthy individuals living mainly in the south of England and most of Wales. Searching the index is free, and it costs £3.50 to download a digital image of a document.
